Elimination + Transformation: Coexisting with Cancer
A Chinese Approach to Cancer Management
The only way forward in cancer treatment is through constant innovation—and that innovation has no end. Ultimately, survival is the most important goal. To achieve this, it is essential not only to eliminate the tumor mass but also to enhance the body's own ability to fight cancer, especially by strengthening immune function. At the same time, it is equally important to transform the cancer itself—modifying its behavior or inducing dormancy. By combining elimination and transformation, cancer cells can be suppressed or driven into dormancy, allowing the body to coexist with cancer in a state of long-term, stable health. This approach reflects the Chinese philosophical concept of yin-yang balance—a harmonious coexistence between opposing forces.
In 2016, Professor Xu Kecheng proposed that it is impossible to completely eradicate cancer cells. The commonly used modern “elimination methods” — surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy — cannot fully cure cancer. Instead, coexistence has become the prevailing approach. By employing various strategies to control cancer cells and enable them to coexist with the patient, cancer can be transformed into a manageable chronic disease. This represents an ideal goal and a feasible strategy achievable through dedicated effort.
