Precision Intervention + Delicate Surgery: Sing May Hospital Helps Patient Overcome the Crisis of a Giant Esophageal Tumor

For international friends, the Sing May team provides wholehearted care; for local patients, the medical staff at Sing May serve with the same sense of responsibility and dedication!

Madam Sun (alias), a woman in her sixties, had been suffering from difficulty swallowing. Upon examination at the hospital, she was found to have a tumor in her esophagus nearly the size of her heart. The mass compressed the esophageal lumen so severely that only a narrow slit remained, making eating increasingly difficult.

Although no distant metastasis was found and surgical removal was theoretically feasible, the tumor was massive and involved numerous blood vessels. The operation posed extreme difficulty and a high risk of bleeding, deterring many surgeons.

Fortunately, Madam Sun came to Sing May Hospital for consultation. After thorough examinations and a multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting, the team agreed it would be a pity to abandon surgery entirely. They proposed a treatment plan starting with interventional embolization, followed by surgical resection once the tumor had shrunk. This approach aimed to cut off the tumor’s blood supply, causing it to shrink, and significantly reduce the bleeding risk during the eventual surgery.

During the procedure, DSA angiography revealed that the tumor had an abundant blood supply. The doctors identified two major feeding arteries and blocked them with embolic agents. Follow-up imaging confirmed that tumor staining had been largely halted.

After the embolization procedure, Madam Sun returned to the ward. Given her underlying psychiatric condition, the nursing team arranged for dedicated care to prevent any episodes of disorientation or loss of control that could lead to complications.

The successful DSA-guided interventional surgery for this elderly oncology patient at Guangzhou Sing May Hospital highlights the hospital’s excellence in humanistic care, multidisciplinary collaboration, and personalized treatment. Whether treating international guests or domestic patients, Sing May consistently demonstrates a strong sense of responsibility and medical professionalism. Looking ahead, Sing May Hospital will continue to advance in the field of interventional surgery, bringing hope and healing to more patients. With concrete actions, we add brilliance to the National Day celebrations!

Six days later, Madam Sun had recovered well and was taken back into the operating room. Professor Mu Feng made an oblique incision on the left chest, carefully dissected through each tissue layer, cut the ribs, and controlled the bleeding.

Confronted with severe adhesions in the abdominal gastrointestinal tract, Professor Mu calmly performed the separation. He used an automatic stapling device to cut the connection between the esophagus and the gastric body, transected the esophageal stump, and cleaned as well as removed the enlarged lymph nodes around the tumor.

Resected Tumor

Ultimately, Professor Mu Feng successfully and completely removed the tumor, resecting approximately 30 cm of the esophagus (including 10 cm containing the tumor), without damaging the thoracic blood vessels or other tissues.

Madam Sun’s postoperative condition remained stable. Under Professor Mu’s meticulous care, she has now entered the rehabilitation phase. The oncology team at Sing May Hospital, with their professionalism and dedication, has built a strong fortress for the patient’s health. We believe that in the future, many more patients will regain new life here.
